'

Complex conjugate transpose operator.

Category: Language Fundamentals > Operators and Elementary Operations

Syntax

B = A'

Swaps rows and columns of A and conjugates complex values. Same as ctranspose(A).

Description

For real data A' is the plain transpose, turning a row into a column and the reverse. For complex data every element is also conjugated, which is the transpose that appears in inner products and least squares: x'*y is the dot product of two column vectors.

The quote is only an operator when it directly follows a value, a name, a closing bracket or another transpose. Elsewhere it starts a character vector such as 'abc'. Use .' for the transpose without conjugation.

Input arguments

A
2-D numeric, logical or char array.

Output arguments

B
Transposed array: element B(j,i) is conj(A(i,j)).

Example

A = [1 2 3; 4 5 6];
A'
z = [1+2i; 3-1i];
z'
z.'
Output
ans = 3×2

     1     4
     2     5
     3     6
ans = 1×2 complex

   1.0000 - 2.0000i   3.0000 + 1.0000i
ans = 1×2 complex

   1.0000 + 2.0000i   3.0000 - 1.0000i
